Our Addiction Therapies
The disease of addiction affects each person who suffers from it uniquely. Individual factors such as co-occurring mental health disorders, underlying medical conditions, personal history of trauma, or other stressors can all impact a patient’s needs in rehab and recovery.
That’s why every patient at Laguna Treatment Hospital consults with our medical director and lead psychiatrist upon admission to establish a custom-tailored treatment plan.
Our Various Addiction Treatment Therapies
At Laguna, patients participate in individual counseling and group therapy sessions led by licensed practitioners. We use a variety of proven substance abuse therapies to help our patients address the many issues that underlie addiction.
Medication for Addiction Treatment
As part of Laguna Treatment Hospital’s medical detoxification and rehabilitation program, medications are used to ease withdrawal symptoms, control cravings, and keep patients as comfortable as possible during the early stages of treatment. Following detox, certain medications may be initiated or continued as needed. If a patient’s aftercare plan includes treatment medications, we can help arrange a medication provider after discharge.
Our clinical staff can also provide comprehensive care for a range of health conditions that require medication, including diabetes, heart disease, HIV, hepatitis, and others.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
This evidence-based addiction treatment method is a type of psychotherapy that encourages people to recognize and examine their negative thought and behavior patterns as they relate to substance abuse and other co-occurring issues. CBT’s goal is to help people shift these patterns, increase self-control and -awareness, and foster the development of better coping skills.
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
Another popular addiction therapy is DBT. Laguna’s therapists use DBT to help patients overcome painful emotions and decrease conflict in their relationships through mindfulness, distress acceptance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal communication.
A form of psychotherapy, our licensed therapists use motivational interviewing (MI) techniques to meet patients where they are and, if necessary, nudge them from ambivalence about treatment toward a genuine personal desire for changing harmful behaviors.
Psychodynamic therapy helps patients understand how the past unconsciously influences their behavior in the present. It works by enabling them to assess unresolved problems and identify the lasting effects of dysfunctional relationships that lead them to misuse substances.
Family Support and Therapy
Addiction is often said to be a family disease, and working with the patient’s family can bolster their recovery. Laguna offers family therapy to patients when appropriate and needed. Within 24 hours of a patient’s arrival at Laguna, staff will reach out to family to inquire if they would prefer to be involved in the patient’s treatment. With the patient’s permission, Laguna staff can coordinate family therapy sessions in-person or via Skype. These sessions can help to support, reinforce, and strengthen a person’s recovery efforts.
Along with individual therapies for addiction between a staff member and a patient, Laguna Treatment Hospital’s behavioral health technicians also host a range of culturally sensitive groups specifically designed to best support clients of diverse backgrounds.
To provide patients with the most comprehensive care available, our evidence-based therapies for substance abuse are often provided in tandem with alternative therapies. Holistic healing methods, such as yoga, mindfulness training, and meditation, are regular components of Laguna’s programming.
Peer support is an essential element of addiction recovery. To help patients build a sense of community, Laguna hosts regular NA and AA meetings, as well as 12-Step alternatives including SMART Recovery and WellBriety.
Individualized Addiction Treatment
Because every patient is different, our Southern California rehab facility tailors its addiction therapies to meet a person’s individual needs and updates treatment plans as needed along the way. Together, this customized care and combination of evidence-based and holistic therapies are used to promote lasting success in recovery.
