Drug Addiction Therapy at Laguna Treatment
Behavioral therapy is often the cornerstone of addiction treatment. At our Orange County rehab, we offer different types of therapy that address the various aspects of substance use disorders.
Read on to learn more about our therapies and how they can help you or your loved one on the path to recovery.
Addiction Treatment Therapies at Laguna
At Laguna, patients participate in individual counseling and group therapy sessions led by licensed practitioners. We use a variety of proven substance abuse therapies to help our patients address the many issues that underlie addiction.
Medication for Addiction Treatment
As part of Laguna Treatment Center’s medical detox and rehabilitation program, medications are sometimes used to ease withdrawal symptoms, control cravings, and keep patients as comfortable as possible during the early stages of treatment.
Following detox, certain medications may be initiated or continued as needed. If a patient’s aftercare plan includes medications for addiction treatment, we can help arrange a medication provider after discharge.
Our clinical staff can also provide comprehensive care for a range of health conditions that require medication, including diabetes, heart disease, HIV, hepatitis, and others.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Drug Addiction
This evidence-based addiction treatment method is a type of psychotherapy that encourages people to recognize and examine their negative thought and behavior patterns as they relate to substance use and other co-occurring issues. The goal of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is to help people shift these patterns, increase self-control and -awareness, and foster the development of better coping skills.
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
Another popular addiction therapy is dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT). Laguna’s therapists use DBT to help patients overcome painful emotions and decrease conflict in their relationships through mindfulness, distress acceptance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal communication.
Motivational Interviewing for Addiction
A form of psychotherapy, our licensed therapists use motivational interviewing (MI) techniques to meet patients where they are and, if necessary, nudge them from ambivalence about treatment toward a genuine personal desire for changing harmful behaviors.
Psychodynamic Therapy
Psychodynamic therapy helps patients understand how the past unconsciously influences their behavior in the present. It works by enabling them to assess unresolved problems and identify the lasting effects of dysfunctional relationships that lead them to misuse substances.
Family Support and Therapy
Addiction is often said to be a family disease, and working with the patient’s family can bolster their recovery. Laguna offers family therapy to patients when appropriate and needed. Within 24 hours of a patient’s arrival at Laguna, staff will reach out to family to inquire if they would prefer to be involved in the patient’s treatment.
With the patient’s permission, Laguna staff can coordinate family therapy sessions in-person or via Skype. These sessions can help support, reinforce, and strengthen a person’s recovery efforts.
Group Therapy
Along with individual therapy for addiction between a staff member and patient, Laguna Treatment Center’s behavioral health technicians also host a range of culturally sensitive groups specifically designed to support patients of diverse backgrounds. This includes specialized group therapy for Veterans and first responders with various focuses, including trauma, anger management, and more.
Equine-Assisted Therapy
During residential treatment at Laguna Treatment Center, patients who are medically cleared and approved for an addiction treatment excursion have the opportunity to participate in equine-assisted psychotherapy at Brave Grace. Hosted on a tranquil, private property in Trabuco Canyon, a peaceful space called The Sanctuary provides trauma-informed equine facilitated therapy.
Group sessions are facilitated by a licensed therapist and an equine specialist. Equine-assisted therapy offers a unique way to:
- Build self awareness
- Learn communication skills
- Explore relationship dynamics
Alternative Therapies
To provide patients with the most comprehensive care available, our evidence-based therapies for substance misuse and addiction are often provided in tandem with alternative therapies. Holistic healing methods that are regular components of Laguna’s programming include the following:
- Yoga
- Breathwork
- Mindfulness training
- Meditation
- Art and music (e.g., painting, drawing, coloring, sound bowls)
Recovery Groups
Peer support is an essential element of addiction recovery. To help patients build a sense of community, Laguna hosts regular Alcoholics Anonymous (AA meetings) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meetings, as well as 12-Step alternatives like:
- SMART Recovery.
- WellBriety.
- Recovery Dharma.
