National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week: Empowering Teens With the Smarts to Say No

This March 17–25, Laguna Treatment Center joins the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) in recognizing National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week (NDAFW). This annual event is dedicated to shattering myths and providing our youth with accurate, science-based information about drugs and alcohol.

Why is NDFAW so important? Because misinformation can be dangerous. Teens are often bombarded with misleading messages about substance use, and it’s crucial to give them the facts they need to make informed decisions about substance use and their health.

What You Need to Know

  • Science-Based Facts: NDFAW focuses on delivering accurate information directly from scientists. This helps teens understand the real risks associated with drug and alcohol use.
  • Brain Development: Did you know that the teenage brain is still developing? This makes teens particularly vulnerable to the effects of drugs and alcohol, which can have long-lasting consequences.
  • The Dangers of Vaping: Vaping is often perceived as less harmful than traditional smoking, but it can still expose teens to addictive nicotine and other harmful chemicals.
  • The Risks of Marijuana: While the drug’s legal status is changing in many areas, it’s essential to understand that the marijuana use can still have negative impacts on brain development, mental health, and academic performance, especially in adolescents.
  • Opioid Awareness: The opioid crisis continues to affect communities nationwide. NDFAW emphasizes the dangers of prescription and illicit opioids, including the risk of overdose.
  • It is ok to ask for help: If you or a loved one is struggling with substance use, you are not alone, and professional treatment can help.

Empowering Our Youth

NDAFW isn’t just about sharing facts; it’s about fostering open conversations. Parents, educators, and community members play a vital role in creating a supportive environment where teens feel comfortable asking questions and seeking help.

Through NDAFW, teens can learn more about substance use and test their knowledge with helpful resources like the National Drug and Alcohol IQ Challenge

They can also share their unique experiences and stories on social media using the hashtag #MyWhyNDAFW. These videos are designed to reach a broader audience, improve awareness and prevention, and inspire change.
